Adding laptops to a network

Multi-user Cardbox licences are designed to be installed in only one place. This means that if you have a setup where some users have laptop computers that are only intermittently connected to your network, you have to think carefully through the licensing implications.

What will the laptop do when not connected to the network?

Nothing that involves Cardbox
In this case you can treat the laptop just like any other PC: it will be able to share the same multi-user licence as everyone else, since it will always be connected to the network when using Cardbox.
Read-only access to databases
(In other words, there are some database files on the laptop and the user needs to be able to view and search them.)
Install a copy of Cardbox on the laptop without giving it a licence of its own, and tell it where to find the shared multi-user licence when it's connected to the network. When the laptop is not connected to the network, Cardbox will operate using the built-in Client Edition licence, which means that it will work in a read-only mode.
Full access to databases
(The user needs to be able to create and modify databases on the laptop.)
In this case you need to install a full single-user Professional Edition copy of Cardbox on the laptop. This licence can't be one that you install anywhere else.

This page has only covered the licensing implications of connecting a laptop. For more detailed information about how to set up Cardbox to work on a network, look in The Cardbox Server Book, which is sent out with all network versions of Cardbox.
